Habanero KS1 was sent to us under the name Habanero Kisin. While the pepper did live up to its claims of higher than average yield, increased wall thickness, and increased heat, it did fall below the claims of a ~600k SHU rating. We had this pepper tested to see if there was truth to the myth and it scored a scoville rating of 333,954 SHU. See below for the details on the KS1. Due to the yield and heat its likely to be the only habanero we will consider growing moving forward.
On average regular habanero is 200,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).
However the Habanero Kisin has been selectively bred to score 670,325 SHU.
When testing this pepper across 3 plants the lab returned a result of 333,954 SHU.

We know there are many legends and stories that float around the pepper growing community so we decided to chase this down and see if we could score some seeds.
The seeds were provided by a grower in Mexico who got them from from the Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán (CICY). The cultivator had grown these peppers for the last 3 years in Mexico and really enjoyed them. We sent the pods for testing in late 2025 using 3 different plants and immediately noticed the higher head compared to commercially available habaneros here. Not only that the walls were thicker (perfect for sauce) and the yield was above average. I would like to tip my hat to Drew from Hurtberry Farm for facilitating getting the seeds from the cultivator while he was in Mexico.
This variety is characterized by its unique shape and size, a color that goes from pale green to a beautiful intense red and its maturity, and distinctive pungency, flavor and aroma.
When I first heard about it I called & emailed the university to get some seeds and nobody answered me, so after 2 years knocking doors, I saw a video about the history of the pepper and I screenshot the name of one of the professors that was involved the research team, so I contacted him through Facebook and he sold me some seeds, I've been growing it for 3 years
From our observations the pods were larger, thicker walled, and were much hotter than regular habaneros.
For those interested additional information on the Kisin can be found here. For those interested in the closest we could get to it, give the Habanero KS1 a try.
